Giving priority to the closest neighbour

The true Muslim does not forget the precise system that Islam set out
when it enjoined the good treatment of neighbours. Islam has told him
to give priority to the one whose house is closest, then the one who
is next closest, and so on. This takes into account the closeness of
the neighbours whose homes are beside one another, the issues which
may frequently arise between them and the importance of maintaining
friendship and harmony.

`A'ishah (radhiallah `anha) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have two
neighbours, so to which one should I send a gift?" He said, "To the
one whose door is closer to yours." (al-Bukhari)

The Sahabah were well-aware of this Islamic teaching regarding the
treatment of one's neighbours, so they would not attend to the good
treatment of neighbours whose home was further away until they had
taken care of the one whose home was nearer. Concerning this, Abu
Hurairah (radhiallah `anhu) said: "He does not start with the
neighbour whose home is further away before he takes care of the one
whose home is nearer. He pays attention to the one whose home is
nearer before he turns his attention to the one whose home is further
away." (Reported by al-Bukhari)

This system of priority in the good treatment of neighbours does not
mean that Muslim should ignore the neighbours who are further away
from his home. Everyone around his home is considered to be a
neighbour and thus enjoys the rights of a neighbour. This systems is
merely a matter of organisatin, by means of which the Prophet
(sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) encouraged taking care of the the
closest neighbour because he is the one with whom there is usually
ongoing contact and interaction.

To be continued, insha Allah

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom
(i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue
with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone
astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in
His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites
(men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I
am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if
Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of
camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, "Whoever
calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who
follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
