Press Release:

MAB condemns decision by RBS to close

Friends of Al-Aqsa account

The Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) is extremely concerned at the decision by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group [which includes Nat West] to close the Friends of Al-Aqsa bank account and the personal and business accounts of its chairman Mr. Ismail Patel and his organization.  The move, which is supported by no legal reasons or logical explanation by the bank, is believed to have been taken either because of the pro-Palestine stance of Mr. Patel and his voluntary organization or because of his Muslim identity. In either case, the bank would be making a great error of judgment and is hereby advised to rescind its decision.

In a letter signed by Mr. Raj Bhardwah, Business Manager at the Leicester branch of the bank, Mr. Patel was told “the bank has carried out a review of your banking arrangements and has decided as a result of that review that it no longer wishes to provide banking facilities to you. The Bank is unwilling to enter into any further discussion with you on this matter and is unfortunately not in a position to provide any references on your behalf.”

Mr. Patel, who had been a customer of the bank for over twenty years, wrote to the bank demanding an explanation. However, the bank refuses to enter into discussions and can only say it is a business decision.

MAB suspects that the bank’s decision is purely political since Friend of Al-Aqsa has always been in credit. As the Royal Bank of Scotland provides no convincing argument in defense of its decision, the Muslim Association of Britain has no option but to inform all its members, supporters and all those who sympathize with the plight of the Palestinian people of the banks bullying tactics.

It appears the Royal Bank of Scotland and Nat West are being used as tools against those that express sympathy with Israel’s victims. No bank or institute should be allowed to get away with such anti-Palestinian or anti-Muslim position.

(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
