salam alaikum,
Recently I made a posting about a sister needing help in USA. A kind sister named Sarah wrote to me with some information regarding Zakat in USA.

I was recently forwarded your email about a sister in the US who is in need of zakat.  I have emailed her, and I wanted to send you the same information in case you know of other people in the US who are in need or who are looking to help fellow muslims and non-muslims in the US. 
 
The Islamic American Zakat Foundation gives zakat to people in the US--they do not send any money abroad.   While they mostly help fellow Muslims, they also give aid to non-Muslims. Their website is www.iazf.org or telephone number 301-907-0997.  They do a good job investigating the claim to make sure that people who are actually in need receive the zakat.  In addition to giving money, they give long term assistance to help people get back on their feet. 
 
In full disclosure, I volunteer with the group and work for a partner organization (Minaret of Freedom Institute, a Muslim think-tank).
