Cartoons Again In Sweden
Bangladesh yesterday condemned the re-publication of cartoons of Prophet
Mohammad (peace be upon him) by some Danish newspapers, saying it could fuel
resentment that may turn out to be destabilizing. "We deeply regret
re-publication of the Danish cartoons. We condemn it," said a foreign ministry
press release. "We fail to understand how hurting the sentiments of a billion
Muslims can advance the cause of freedom of expression!" it said. "It can only
spur resentment that can be destabilizing," the press release said, referring
to the widespread protests that followed the first-time publication of the
cartoons by Danish newspapers in 2006.
We support the government of Bangladesh move and condemn the Danish
newspapers who published the cartoons again which led to so much turmoil last
year in many parts of the world. What can be said about publishing the same
offensive cartoons except deliberate provocation. We always feel that freedom
is very important but there can be no right without some limits in the interest
of decency, morality and law and order. We are not for many restrictions but
some restrictions on freedom of speech and publication is needed , for instance
publishing materials defaming God, the Prophets and founders of great
religions. Most probably an international protocol is needed in this matter
under the auspices of the United Nations.
