Matt Foley created CLOUDSTACK-2722:
--------------------------------------

Summary: KVM Hypervisor host install instructions say to set up
VLANs for Basic networking
                 Key: CLOUDSTACK-2722
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-2722
             Project: CloudStack
          Issue Type: Bug
Security Level: Public (Anyone can view this level - this is the default.)
          Components: Doc
    Affects Versions: 4.0.2
            Reporter: Matt Foley

In the version 4.0.2 Installation Guide, the second sentence of section 8.1.7.1
says "In the Basic networking mode you should have two (V)LAN's, one for your
private network and one for the public network." It then gives instructions
for setting up three (!) VLANs.

Setting up VLANs is complex and has significant risk of conflicting with
standard IT setup. Therefore, if it isn't needed for Basic networking setup,
the doc should not say it is required. Furthermore, this VLAN setup isn't
mentioned in the Quick Install Guide nor the Admin Guide. Nothing says how
these VLANs are used by the services, or how to declare them to the Management
Server. Some other doc sections talk about VLANs, but only in the context of
VMWare or XenServer, or Advanced zone networking.

I queried the user list (in thread "need to set up VLANs on KVM hosts for Basic
Zone?"), and [~sanjeevn] responded "Basic zone configuration does not require
any vlan configuration and all the traffic in basic zone is untagged traffic.
VLANs are used only in case of Advanced zone configuration."

Thanks to Sanjeev for the info.
