Like you discovered yourself: it doesn't seem to be a maven-release-plugin bug.
There doesn't seem to exist a newer version
(http://search.maven.org/#search%7Cga%7C1%7Ccvsclient). If there was a newer
version, it should be fixed in the [SCM
Project#cvs|https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SCM/component/11190].
So there's nothing we can do here.
