I am having this issue as well.
Steps:
1) Inside the .ods file, hit "save as"
2) Name file
3) Choose File type as "Excel 2003 .xml"
4) Hit save
5) Pop up asks me if I want to save as a .ods or keep formatting
6) Choose Keep formatting
7) Save bar starts, then hangs
8) After a short time I get the message that Calc is not responding.
Problem:
Cannot save as to Excel 2003 format.
Expectations:
To be able to save as Excel 2003 format for sharing with an Excel user.
