I use Patterns in .mbsynrc and there I can have things like
"[Gmail]/Spam"
with no problems. E.g.,
Channel home-updown

Patterns "INBOX" "[Gmail]/Spam" "[Gmail]/Trash" "[Gmail]/Drafts" "2read"
Expunge Both
Channel home-up
