if you need to check the level of nested xobject in a pdf file, you can try
to use a piece of code I wrote:

How to control it? It depends how you application works. AFAIK there is no
(easy) way to reduce the leve
I can provide a PDF that works and a PDF that gives the error - if needed.
I am not sure if I can control how the PDF is constructed when using the
graphics to paint it's content.

I saw there was a similar discussion, but the way of sending info to iText
was different (we use PdfContentByte.createGraphics(...)). Anyway, the PDF
is created but it gives an error when it is printed:
