I'm using OpenJDK 8 + JabRef 3 under Ubuntu 14.04, so I know you can do that. I think the problem is because you're using Java 7. I take it you were running Java 2.x prior to now? Are you able to install more than one version of Java on your machine? (You must be permitted to install/update some
