Sure, naturally!! ;-))

(if you restrict your thinking about only Servers of Web, both
solutions are suitable.)
Java, it self, is a "hyper"robust plattiform!!
But, I do recomend strongly you to use JBoss Application Server, that
its Web Server is TomCat. (as you say you're gonna work with a large
scale application)

So you will be able of making interoperability across
WebServices!! ;-)) (ah, you mentioned 'Struts'?! You would bether
rather use TapeStry or even Struts2(WebWork) Controller frameWork)

Yes, it is! (the way I sad above) And futurelly you can expande to SOA
(JBoss Seam) and even  BPM (if you need/wish)!! ;-))
