In my opinion, something could be more important than that feature: a
better sound support, especially to get sound working in a universe with
more than one View / Canvas3D (which actually doesn't works also if the
sound is initialized for one View only) and MP3 / OGG support.

This type of debate is great and just what we had hoped for from the
Java 3D community, keep it up !
Adding extensibility (which would include access to the lower level
rendering system) to the Java3D API is something we are interested in.
This (along with many other possible directions) will be d

Your best bet is to incorporate Java3D into another discipline, like geology,
biology, ... afterall Java3D is a visualization tool.

Although I can't directly answer the question about how to find a job
as a Java3D programmer, what I have seen is a few museums who have put
in multiscreen theatres. One of the complaints they had was how much
money it was costing them to commission content for their theatres.
There seems to me to

My group deeply appreciates Suns commitment. We have invested
significant internal resources developing Java3D applications for
engineering visualization, and this decision provides us with confidence
to move ahead. Thanks to all who have brought this about.

Doug,
Excellent news. Better late than never! ;-)
Seriously, this is a great opportunity for the J3D community to come
together to build the scene graph API for Java that we have all been
dreaming of.
Hats off to SUN for having the courage to evolve the API through
java.net and the JCP.
Sincerely
I am going to celebrate this great news among a group of my friends who more
or less are related with J3D. A lot of thanks to Sun!

It has not been completely worked out yet. It will most likely
be something in between SCSL and BSD. We are trying to
make it easy for developers to do what they need to do, but
still maintain compatibility.
