There was a discussion about predictability of custom design vs mass production. Yes, a lot of software developers work on highly customized solutions. But why would it be any other way? Software development is by definition writing new software. And most of the clients that can afford a significant amount of good developers' time are in enterprise space. So a lot of us are working on custom solutions for big players and in our spare time we play with projects near and dear to our heart. While many of us are keen on writing software for fun as well as work, no one in their right mind would sit down and write a custom web browser for their relatives; rather, we tell them to go download Firefox.
I see this is as being no different than what you see with, let's say, mechanical engineering. Highly customized solutions exist and are in demand, just not by your average person, who is content with going to a store and buying a mass-produced solution (car, drill, vacuum cleaner), whereas enterprise customers usually work closely with R&D and get that turbine or plane or crane designed and manufactured to their specifications. It's just that most of us not working in those industries, we're not as aware of that type of work. And when those people go home, a lot of them devote their time and expertise to "fun" projects.
