OK, I followed Jimmy's directions to do this, at least I think I did,
and now instead of saying > it says "space".
What did I do wrong and how do I get it to instead say nothing when it
sees the > sign instead of saying "space"?

It turns out that the need for space and band with was getting to be more than
the little package I had purchased was going to be able to handle. A year ago
when my wife and I talked about this we figured that it was best to start out
small, who knew it would grow so quickly.

I have JFW 8 on two computers, and am having no issues. In fact, it
works a lot better with Eudora than did version 7.

Its possible that going back in and editing out the space in the jaws
dictionary manager and leaving this area blank might fix this. If you used the
Jaws dictionary manager to get rid of the > > > signs. The actual purpose for
the dictionary manager is to correct

Hope this isn't too much off topic but.
I'm using an Acer Travelmate laptop with a bunch of mouse controls just
below the main keyboard.
Unfortunately, when resting my palms on the kdyboard, the mouse controls get
activated.
Is there a way of disabling that mouse pad arrangement??

OK, I'm far too literal I guess, a good atribute in my job, and so did
type in the word "space". I went back in and took out the word and
simply hit the space bar and WaLa, it works!

Sounds like you are getting the information bar.
Somewhere there should be a dialogue that you can ok, and then hit alt N, to
get a context menu of options to read the document.
