If this ever happens to anybody, here is the fix as far as I can determine.
Forget about trying to open Word Documents and instead open a new Word
document that will be blank. You will be asked if you want to do this and
then it will be announced that information is being gathered. After a litt

About the only thing I've had issues with concerning Word and with Jaws on
any version was with Norton's plug in on the micellaneous tab that has to be
unchecked or otherwise jaws seems to not work correctly
