If you want to avoid messages opening up automatically, disable the preview
pane by going into the view menu, then entering on the layout...
Once in there, uncheck the box that says preview pane.
Then you'll have to open the messages manually to read them.

I just thought of another point you might want to consider if you want to
keep the preview pane open.
There is a check box that you can uncheck in the options dialog box under
the read tab.
Go into your tools menu by pressing alt+T, then press O for options.
Once in the dialog box,
