Hi. Google has made change's to their website, that makes the edit field more unaccessible for people using screenreader's. But a few line above the edit field, there is a link, "If you are using a screenreader, than click here". I am not sure if the text is displayed just as i have described

Have you tried using http://www.google.com/m this is the mobile page and much less cluttered. i switched to this after we lost the googlelabs accessibility page. Additionally, doing a control+insert+home puts focus on the first edit on a page, in this case the search edit. hth Doris T
