If you can talk to who ever is sending you these files, if I were you, I'd ask them if they'd be so kind as to save them as DOC files Vs DOCX files. They can do it, they might just not realize you have an older version of office. Then you save the trouble of installing something you won't really

Well, I do see the virtual cursor and the personalized inline frame settings if I follow Mike's instructions. but even if I set the personalized setting (the second one) to not ignore inline frames and then tab to ok, it makes no difference and the inline frames are still invisible on the web

I should say dictionary.com is really really notorious to put dozens and dozens of trojans and cookies on your system if you use it even once and that only means it clogs your PC over time, hits you with ads at random times while on the web browser surfing the internet and in general is evil.
