Also, it is not CTRL+F1 as I mistakenly typed. It is CTRL+1 that brings up

Here is what works for me. I am using Excel 2007.
If I want to add the sum of cells K1 through K5, do the following.
=sum(k1:k5)
Note: it may help to read this formula

One more comment is that using CTRL+Shift+1 changes the cell formatting to
the numbering format using two decimal places.
