On my Dell laptop Insert plus F11 does open the system tray andV does
bring me to some volume options, but without sighted help it would be
hard to figure out the next steps, so I echo the advice to seek sighted
help.
Also, on my lap top there are buttons for changing volume and one of
it has some volume buttons but no mute button.
We checked the mute buttons and that wasn't it.

There's no virus.
I tried to put in headphones in the microphone part, and when I did audacity
it stopped working when it loaded, so it is something I have done.. it's not
a virus. Good thought though.
