That is a bug in the realtek chip set. many have ben replacing it
with either a different internal sound card or external sound device

Have you turned off microphone boost in the sound properties?
This can often be the source of most external sound problems.
I would also confirm that the sound you are recording from is indeed the
microphone you have plugged in, and not some other microphone source.
