I recently retrieved the list of members for this group from the server and
saved it in a word document. Now I'd like to sort it alphabetically because the
server doesn't do that itself. So the question is how do I accomplish this
minor feet of magic?

Would you believe it's under the tables menu. My choices in the sort
dialog are 'paragraph' and 'field 1'. I was tinkering with a list,
so did 'field 1' and it sorted neatly.

Yes, Excel is one way to do it, but an advantage of using Word with your
info in a list (not a table) is that you can tell it which word to sort on
in each line. So for example if your list is written first name followed

Well I got the file sorted but unfortunately not in word. What I did was
save it as text and then went to the command prompt and used the old fashion
DOS sort command which I am happy to report still works in XP pro. Still I
am going to try and figure out just why

You would need to put your data into a table. Then you can sort by text.
That would alphabetize your list
