Although it might be considered a technically wrong interpretation, I would
still classify the 1.1 specification's JMS is compatible with JDK 1.1.x as a
hint that the client stack should not only run on 1.4, but all the way back to
1.1.

The new Bridge is very handy when integrating with different providers, but
when that works there is a small added feature that could give a lot of value

Yes, we ended up doing something like:
* Introduce a command servlet
* Rewrite rules changing the nice url to one with parameters that the servlet
can parse (including which portal page to use)
* Do checking and logic in the command servlet
* Use HTTP getting directly inside the command servlet
