The bundled version uses the latest available unmodified community version of
JBoss AS (for the 4.2.x branch at this point) available when we release a new
Portal version. Until JBoss AS includes the proper JBoss WS version, you are
stuck with upgrading manually.

your own other than what's freely available online.

Sorry to be clear here.. I've been told the community edition has all the
features of specifically portal already configured and more out of the box
ready, verses the enterprise edition which takes 'longer' to set up and
configure.
Is there any truth to that?

bundle, current Enterprise Portal Platform 4.3 is a bundle and as Prabhat said,
it's just a matter or downloading, unzipping and running (same as JBoss Portal
bundle)
