why not create tag files? In my opinion they are much better then using
ui:include..

Thanks for the food for thought. I haven't tried the tag files yet, but the
idea pushed me in the right direction.
It looks like the problem was with the tag I used to start the file.
It needs to be
ui:composition ...
| h:panelGrid
|...
| /h:panelGrid
|
