Thanks for your reply. May I ask for ideas as to how such a system can be
implemented ? (other than an in-memory DB) Should I look at JBoss Cache ?

Definitely NOT!
PCs are not supposed to be shared between users. If this is causing you
problems, it means that the scope of your PC is too long.
