OK. I have a simple test app that reproduces the error. I can send it to you.
One thing of note it that I am using portlets, but that shouldn't make a
difference.

Seam was swallowing the real exception, which was from Hibernate Validator.
This is now fixed in CVS.
You should be using required=true on your JSF fields.
