Btw there's been a timeframe in the past where the ant.properties.example was
missing (you had a custom ant.properties instead). This has already been fixed
anyway.

I was able to get this to work. I didn't have to run any ant script. The Users
Guide had a more complete java source listing and after adding the EJB3 Remote
interface the the service deployed correctly.
