The problem is solved removing the php4-rrdtool module in
/etc/php4/{apache,cli,cgi}/php.ini

We are now monitoring 278 hosts with 3,853 interfaces. Recently our
server has become a little sluggish. The load average is over 5.00 on a
60 minute average, and just recently my seperate SQL server (that used
to run at less than 1.00 load, is now up to 4.00 or higher).
