Thanks for taking the time to submit this bug report.
We are currently working on the applet code, with a goal of releasing a
new version of Jmol within the next few weeks.
I strongly suspect that this problem is related to the use of some
libraries which were not compiled with the right flags.

- included gnujaxp.jar in JmolApplet.jar
- works fine with appletviewer 1.1.6
