It's a bit trickier if you are using the track pad in the "drag
lock" (tap tap-drag) mode. To do a pan you'd need to do a tap, tap,
tap-drag. To release you'd then tap one last time. I often wondered
why there isn't another way to do it---a different command key or
command key combination.
