Otis,
I may be wrong, but I don't think that declaring the page as HTML vs. XHTML
should make
any difference as to what CSS is supported (html tags yes, but not css).
Transitional vs. strict

Don't think so. That does not come from Java, it's hardcoded in Jmol.js
It's the text that goes inside the object or applet tag in the source code, as

Maybe not totally related to this problem, but I think that Jmol.js might be

pickiness.
The appearance of the yellow box is what makes me think of this.

it's important to include this doctype crap on a web page.

Oh, then it's definitely a different problem.
OK, I wnt to my colleague's PC (Windows 7, latest Java). Your page
opens and has no problem BUT the yellow square displays below
Otis,
Applet loads for me using MSIE 9.0/Windows 7. An additional yellow box
saying I don't have Java installed ALSO is displayed under the applet. But
the applet is fine. This does not occur with my pages, so I suspect it is a
subtle problem with your page HTML. For example, a missing /> in a tag

I have not IE9 now at hand, but in part this sounds like the last
problem reported in Jmol-users list: IE was closing down the page.
I'm not sure what the fix was then (some saw it, some not), but
yesterday in a colleague's PC we had the problem again (she had just

All,
I just installed MSIE 9 (Widows 7). Our model kit page crashes the browser
on opening. If, however, I switch to comparability mode (for "older
pages"), the page loads properly. MS is not very helpful when it comes to
causes, but my system returns the following in the new MSIE "unibox" (or
