You should go over to India to see the class stratification for yourself. To *some* Indians this would be a *great* wage. Unbelievable but true. I was just in Delhi a couple of months ago visiting, and a senior programmer working for a reasonable company can expect 400,000 to 600,000 rupees(5700-8500 GBP or 8,000-12,000 USD) per annum. And people making this are quite well off. They can have servants, eat well, and have a nice place to live. The 48,000-72,000 offered by this position would seemingly be sufficient for someone living at home, or in a poor section of town where the costs of living are infinitesimal, when compared to western standards.
In comparison, a full-time servant can be had for as little as 1,000 rupees per month. *20* bucks. Besides the alarming amount of poverty in India, another shocking thing for me was meeting person after person who was certified to work in IT, but could not get a job because there aren't enough to go around. For example, one guy was a travel agent near Karalbaugh who was a certified Oracle DBA. There were lots like him. Wherever I went, when people would find out I was in IT (Web / Application Dev) they would come out of the woodwork asking me to employ them or their brother/son/wife/uncle who is fully qualified in xyz. I never saw any official employment figures, but I *guesstimate* Indian unemployment to be between 15-30%. This is just from seeing so many people just sitting about or begging. It is rather disconcerting to see fellow humans in such a state of difficulty. Another thing that made the news over there a couple of times, and had the IT people I was in contact with worried: Western Protectionist IT policies. There were quite a few articles about laws proposed or currently going through the States and European gov'ts to protect their own IT workers. This has the Indians quite scared. The western nations have been flooding the Indian economy with money. And it terrifies the Indians to have it taken away or restricted in any way. As you would expect them to feel. Now, I live and work in the UK, and am of *Canadian* citizenship with European and American ancestry. These are just my opinions/experiences that I am relating to pass in my 2p. PS - Frankly, having the IT jobs gobbled up by the poorer nations terrifies me!
