I'm getting close (stuffing to this.data and using it), but still would love to get better hack: $('#foo').click(function () { $.get($(this).find('a:first').attr('href'), function (data) { this.data = data; alert($(this).find('table#bar').html()); } ); } ); Still there is a problem, couldn't reuse this.data (caching so that I don't have to $.get() again).
