are you using the validate plugin? i'm not familiar with it at all,
but for a simple validation like this you could do:

// DOM-ready handler
$(function() {
        // Listen for "onsubmit" events for the form
        $("#signupForm").submit(function() {
                // Get the checkbox
                var checkbox = $("#chkStatus5");
                // True or false based on the checkbox
                var checked = checkbox[0].checked;

                // If its checked...
                if (checked) {
                        // ...grab the textfield...
                        var text = $("#textfield");
                        // ...and its value
                        var val = text.val();

                        // If the textfield is empty...
                        if (val === "") {
                                // ...validation failed,
                                // so do something!
                        }
                }
        });
});
