I've enclosed a sketch of a new GUI, based on my own fevered imagination as well as your suggestions. I'm not certain I'll ever do any of this (sorry) but I wanted to write down something more concrete than "the GUI sucks". If someone ever works on the GUI, this might make a good starting point.
