I just had a look at some of the ideas in the Google Summer of Code and I think it is going to be tough to win any students over from sexy projects like One Laptop Per Child to something as boring as GIS. Good timing - we were talking about this very topic in todays GeoTools meeting. And arriving at a similar spot - that OSGeo would be the best organization for the task. What we initial need however is someone on the "admin" side to get the OSGeo effort underway; perhaps provide a template for "
