Dear Geoff,
I am not an expert but I just found out that VertexSymbol plugins works on my
PC (Ubuntu 9.10, Java 1.6) with OJ 1.4.0.2.
The only thing is that the orientation does not work by attribute but by value.
Other experiences?

I have just discovered that my VertexSymbol plugin is not working with
the latest OpenJump release( Vers 1.4), it works with 1.2F. I suspect
that something in the core has changed in the area of vertex styles.
The process I used is something like this:
