Indeed, that might be the reason, however JunOS is due to check for hardware
compatibility before to upgrade, unless you force it, or the hardware is not
online during the upgrade.
So maybe it's an hardware fault that happened because of the reboot... does
going back to 8.5 solves it?

we have here a strange problem.
After Upgrade JunOS from 8.5 to 9.3 on our M20-Router the FPCs case
errors and go off-line.
Enclosed is an excerpt from the logfile (/var/log/messages):
ssb CM(0): Slot 0: Unrecoverable error; probe failed
ssb CM(0): Slot 0: No response from FPC

Which kind of FPCs are these?
The very, very old FPC's (prior to E-FPC's) no longer work in 9.3, as
stated in release
