The error message is
"Username or password incorect. (Command:*Sensitive*;ersponse:#3#[NO,LOGIN
failed.])"
Can anyone tell me what that means?

Nice thought and thanks for the suggestions, but that does not seem to be
the problem. I went in and switched off the optimization and restarted the
phone and the problem is still there.

battery optimization seems to wreak some havoc with many apps, including
K9. So, if you turn off battery optimization for K9, it may help. Again,
this may be unrelated but it's worth a try.
