I am having the same problem. I turned off the power saving, and still
will not sync automatically per email setting.
Still shows disabled.

Had the same thing on my Pixel XL. To correct it in settings search for
Battery Optimization. There is a drop down for All Apps. Scroll down to K9
Maiil and select it. It will give two options. Optimized and Don't
optimize. Select Don't Optimize. Done and back out of settings. This
corrected it
I have been having the same issue with my Samsung S7 Edge and already tried
a lot of things. The menus are a bit different on the Samsung so the only
thing I can find is Settings - > Device Management -> Battery ->
Unmonitored Apps. There I can add K9 to the list. I think it should be the
same
Hmmm...I have a pixel xl running nougat and it works. I assume that you've
checked the appropriate notification settings to make sure you have them
set right. So, I'll guess that it is an issue with your phone and nougat.

Thanks Mathguy! I was able to choose not to optimize K9 under doze, which
restored the automatic syncing
(see

for a useful article). However, I still can't get the flashing notification
I believe this issue is related to the Doze feature in Nougat. If you
search this board, you'll find how to fix the issue. Sorry I'm not more
helpful I just recall something about Doze and syncing that was an issue.

I'm having the same problem except I use imap. I have a Sony phone and this
problem also started with android 7. It syncs fine when I do it manually
and it used to always sync every 5 minutes before and now it doesn't. I've
tinkered with lots of settings and nothing seems to help.

I think there is a bug (or maybe a feature) in the code.
Once k9 losses sync it never turns it back on. So I was killing the app and
restarting every day, not very practical.
The app can be coded so that android does not doze it.
I did manage to stop mine from dozing, but it took a few days to fi
S5 on Sprint with K-9, ever since Marshmallow, K-9 has been nigh-on
unusable. IMAP is constantly rolling to syncing disabled - I have disabled
the power saving for apps with app power saving set to off (I have also
disabled it for K-9 prior) but the damn thing still dozes and kills syncing
