Once done, they announce they have ‘finished’ the lesson. What usually follows is underling difficult words and answers to the comprehension questions at the end of the lesson and learning the rules and definitions of a grammar concept. What can we do to shift from ‘teaching reading’ to nurturing a love for reading? As an educator, I always try to create positive reading experiences for my students – ones where they learn something new or those that provide opportunities to think and talk. When teaching strategies help students identify their purpose for reading, make predictions, express their opinions, enter the lives of characters, see connections with their own worlds, they begin to comprehend what they read and get hooked on as active readers for life!
