Something akin to what Jari described in comment #3, but perhaps including both the "Paste" and "Create new folder" actions? I think it would be great to give the users a choice, and (in my view) it would not carry the same responsibility for the developers as forcibly changing the behavior while a "blocking" bug is open. It is also not clear to me whether there is a consensus on how to resolve #424723, so this change would effectively sidestep the issue, and would solve the present bug regardless of how #424723 progresses. Personally, I would immediately enable this option, since I typically select the destination folder with the mouse right before pressing CTRL+V, so I won't risk getting confused by any previously selected folders. I think Jari described a quite similar workflow in his opening post and in comment #5.
