Can confirm that removing the SplitterState and ThumbbarState lines from the
~/.config/digikamrc file temporally solves the issue, but that empty space
reappears after a couple of restarts.

in digikamrc file, we can see 2 lines from MainWindow section:
SplitterState=...blabla1...
ThumbbarState=...blabla2...
These lines are used to encode position en size of thumbbar and the separator
