For completeness I thought I'd better try burning a new TDK DVR+R using the
Windows VM just to confirm that route worked for them as well as the Verbatim
ones. It did not. The error message led me to a set of posts

I bought some TDK 16x DVD+R disks. More or less the same issue but started to
have issues around 89%:
