weston unlike kwin doesn't require Xwayland. If you start weston with xwayland
support, Xwayland is only started on first X application.
And yes, you can try running kwin manually. Either nested in an X session or

I can get weston-1.9 working ok, I'm not sure how I can investigate this issue,
which logs should I be looking at for clues? Can I try and start kwin manually?
Is there anything I need to set up?
