How does this work in case of "Type to search", e.g. on the Dashboard
Application launcher?
There is no widget which can be activated.

Regarding the virtual keyboard, the primary goal should be to automatically
show it when a widget has keyboard focus, as indicated by XIM on X11. Not sure
if Wayland has similar technology to inform the compositor
