I have done a clean install (but still have an image of the old install,
although that's irrelevant). The problem persists. I created a fresh user and
the problem is not present for that user, so it must be a user con

I'm considering doing a clean reinstall, so if you'd like any debugging doing
on this please let me know what I could do. I'm not afraid of gdb.
