This is something I observed while testing:

The crux of the problem is that sometimes the folder view widget will not scale
elements properly when it has to account for, say, a panel in its way.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE (what works for me)
1. Align a sufficient number of icons so that you make sure they will
horizontally or vertically intersect with a panel
2. Make a more drastic icon size change, e.g. from Large to Small Medium
3. Take notice of how the elements are not rendered properly
OBSERVED RESULT
Both the text and the icons are not rendered sharply:

EXPECTED RESULT
If you change the sorting mode you trigger the proper rendering:
