It does seem to be caused by switching from 1440p to 1080p, back to 1440p, but
I can't consistently reproduce it. The output of "kscreen-doctor -o" before and
after the shadow disappears is the same:

I forgot to mention that it might be caused by connecting/disconnecting an
external display of higher resolution (1440p vs 1080p). Perhaps the shadow's
only going as far as the lower res. display extends--I haven't care
